KUCHING: Three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) dedicated to animal welfare are calling on the authorities to take swift and appropriate action against the perpetrator involved in a hit-and-run incident that killed a dog on Jan 16.

In a joint statement by Paws Of Hope MY, Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and Humane Animal Society Sarawak (HASS), they strongly condemn the recent hit-and-run incident, which happened at Lorong Stampin 7 here.

“This avoidable tragedy showed the urgent need for accountability, compassion and awareness on our roads.

“The incident is currently under investigation by the police, with a report lodged and the perpetrator already having given a statement at the police station.

“CCTV footage of the incident clearly shows that the driver of a Toyota Vios, bearing the licence plate QAA5195P, had ample opportunity to slow down and allow the dog to cross safely.

“Instead, the driver made the deliberate and cruel choice to accelerate, causing death to the helpless animal. The driver then fled the scene without taking responsibility,” the statement read.

As organisations dedicated to animal welfare, they are deeply saddened by this senseless act and call for immediate action to identify and hold the driver accountable under existing laws to serve as a deterrent against such reckless behaviour.

“We also call for the need to raise awareness about responsible driving, reminding drivers that animals are not road-conscious and rely on human attentiveness for their safety, and advocate for stronger animal protection laws to prevent similar incidents and ensure justice for animals who have no voice of their own,” the statement said.

“This tragic incident is not just about one dog but it is a reminder of the lack of empathy and accountability that puts lives, human and animal alike, at risk.

“We stand united in demanding justice for the innocent life lost and in advocating for a safer and more compassionate society.

“While police investigation continues, we urge the public to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings.

“Animal cruelty must not be tolerated, and this case must serve as a reminder of the pressing need for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws,” the statement said.

Paws Of Hope MY, SSPCA, and HASS are committed to ensuring justice is served and will continue to support the ongoing investigation.

“Animal welfare is not just a legal obligation – it is a moral duty that everyone all share.”
