KUCHING: AmBank is open to participating in the development of a financial hub in Sarawak, should such plans materialise in the future.
AmBank Group managing director of Business Banking Christopher Yap said Sarawak has the potential to establish a financial centre, similar to other financial hubs in Malaysia.
“There is potential for us to develop, for example, a financial hub for Sarawak. In the southern region of Malaysia, we have the state financial zone, and Penang also has its own financial centre.
“So, the question is whether there are plans in Sarawak to establish a financial hub or centre.
“If such an opportunity arises, we would like to be involved,” he told the media following a courtesy visit to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today (Apr 14).
Yap mentioned that AmBank had also discussed various economic matters with Sarawak’s leadership and believes that the financial institution could play a more significant role in the state’s economic development.
“We have discussed these matters and many others are currently being explored.
“AmBank believes that we can play a larger role in helping the state grow and encourage more participation in Sarawak’s economy,” he added.
