MIRI: A wife’s request to her husband to have an empty cooking gas cylinder replaced at a nearby sundry shop apparently enraged the man who went berserk.
He assaulted his 25-year-old wife and threatened to shoot her with a homemade shotgun. The incident happened in their workers’ quarters on Tuesday morning (July 21) in Niah.
Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah told reporters that in the 6.45am incident, the woman had requested her husband to bring the empty cylinder to the sundry shop and replace it.
The man who was at that time asleep, went berserk for being awaken and started attacking and pushing the woman, who was carrying her one-month child, to the ground.
Lim said the suspect then grabbed a homemade shotgun and threatened to shoot her. The woman and the child somehow managed to escape before they could be harmed further.
Police, acting on a report, despatched a team to the scene the same day.
“The suspect, also aged 25, however escaped from the workers quarters after the incident that morning, ” Lim said.
Police recovered the shotgun used in the incident, another homemade gun and several cartridges.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 8 (a) of the Arms Act 1960.
