KUCHING: Alert members of the public helped avert a tragedy by rescuing an underage girl from attempting to harm herself at a building near the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) yesterday (Jan 31).

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah confirmed receiving information about the distressing situation at 9.53 am.

“The teenager was saved and immediately taken to the SGH emergency ward for necessary treatment.

“She is currently under the care of a psychiatric medical officer at the hospital,” he said in a statement.

Yesterday, the incident went viral after a minute-long video clip was uploaded on Facebook.

The video depicted a girl sitting on the handrail with her arms wrapped around a pole, situated at a building believed to be a multi-storey carpark.

The video depicted a man seen engaging in a conversation with the distressed girl before a group of individuals intervened and successfully pulled her away from the edge of the handrail.
