MIRI: A water leakage at the airport here on Tuesday afternoon (Jan 21), attributed to heavy rain and strong winds, has prompted concerns over the facility’s ageing infrastructure.
The leakage was caused by an overflow from a rain gutter on one of the airport’s pillars, prompting Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, to reach out to Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to address the issue.
The airport operator confirmed that contractors have been dispatched to inspect the site and carry out remedial work.
In light of the incident, Lee urged the airport authorities to conduct a thorough inspection of the facility to prevent a recurrence.
He emphasised the potential impact such incidents could have on the experience of visitors arriving at the airport.
“The infrastructure at Miri Airport is over two decades old,” he said, adding, “while plans for the airport’s expansion are in progress, it is equally crucial to prioritise the maintenance and repair of existing facilities.”
Lee said that he would work closely with the relevant authorities to address these issues promptly.
