KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has raised concerns over the slow progress of state government projects, urging agencies to ensure timely implementation.

Despite the allocation of funding, he expressed frustration over delays in executing certain projects that were announced by him and other cabinet members.

To address this, he called on the responsible agencies to conduct frequent on-site inspections immediately after projects are announced, ensuring swift execution.

“Sometimes projects that I announce are not progressing as they should. I do not know exactly where the weakness lies along the line.

“Funding has been allocated, yet implementation is slow.

“Once a project has been announced and allocations given, it must be swiftly executed,” he asserted.

He said this during the Premier’s Department Aidilfitri Ramah Tamah event at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today (Apr 14).

Citing the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) 2 project as a prime example, the Premier said it is crucial for the project to be completed by April 2028, coinciding with Sarawak’s hosting of an international water conference.

“If delayed, where will we accommodate the delegates? It will be embarrassing for us.

“We have become a major conference hub, and we won the bid. We defeated other countries to host this.

“But if we are not ready, it will negatively impact us,” Abang Johari cautioned.

As such, he stressed that achieving Sarawak’s 2030 development targets requires collective effort and rigorous oversight.

He added that other rakyat-focused projects that had been announced and funded must be executed without unnecessary delays.

“Although this request adds extra work, we must remain committed. Ministers must also work hard,” he added.
