BINTULU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wants the Bintulu Development Authority to opt for technology in managing waste to energy.
He said although landfill is one of the ways to manage waste, such a method is not really advisable as the chemicals in the wastes might bring harm to the soil and the environment.
He pointed out that although using an incinerator is a much pricier option, using technology is much better than simple waste disposal.
“During our meeting this morning, I asked them to look at the options to see the volume of their waste and decide what sort of technology they can opt for in their waste management.
“If the investment for the incinerator is too big, maybe the next generation of incinerator will be less expensive which they can consider.”
He said this when officiating at the Sg Plan Bintulu Restoration Programme held at Magherita Plaza Hotel, here today.
Abang Johari noted that advancement in technology had enabled waste products to be turned into energy.
“I do highly think that we need to use the current technology to face the issues that we have in hand,” he added.
In another development, he announced that under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiation with the Federal Government, the Sarawak Government would soon have absolute control of its environment.
“This is as far as Sarawak is concerned. Meaning that we will be taking care of our own nature… The Federal Government is giving the power back to Sarawak to manage its environment,” he said.
