BELAGA: The Orang Ulu community has been encouraged to learn and adopt smart farming methods.

Dayak Chamber of Commerce (DCCI) executive secretary Terence Temenggong Jayang said many of the younger generation regarded farming as unattractive.

“They do not wish to be working in the fields or get involved in farming.

“Hence, the need to use smart farming technology and Internet of Things (IoT) which incorporate new methods of farming such as fertigation and hydroponics in the planting of chillies, ginger, vegetables, fruits and others.

“It is hoped that through modern farming, rural agriculture-based communities and economies will increase their monthly income to the projected level of RM6,000 per month or even higher,” he on Monday (Jan 30).

Some 60 participants from Uma Kulit, Sg Asap successfully completed the three-day fertigation technology farming course organised by DCCI.

The workshop was funded by the Ministry of International Trade, Industry under the Bumiputera Business Recovery Fun Programme and was held from Jan 26 to 28.

DCCI hoped that through modern agricultural practices, the participants would not only be able to plant vegetables for their own consumption but earn extra income as well.

In response to the various queries to organise similar courses, DCCI also encouraged Uma Kulit Women Bureau to forward their proposals to their representatives.
