Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the state government had provided RM1.3 million for this purpose.

“This means that if there is a need for them later, they are already there. We were really short of these ventilation points last time, so that is why the state government has assisted the hospital in this matter,” he said.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman was speaking to the media following his visit to the hospital here on Wednesday (Jan 26) to review the hospital’s facilities, especially its intensive care unit (ICU).

Touching on the approaching Chinese New Year season, he appealed to the public to be cautious and adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) as the war against COVID-19 was not won yet.

“We are where we are today because people are disciplined and they follow the SOP. If everybody is disciplined, wears the face mask, and practises social distancing, then I believe all will be well,” he said.

Uggah warned that the Omicron variant was already present in Sarawak, hence the need for everyone to be more careful.

“We hope that with our high booster rate, we will be able to maintain where we are now,” he said.

He also urged people who are eligible for the booster to take the jab as it seemed to help in riding through the Omicron storm.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and SGH director Dr Ngian Hie Ung.

During the visit, Uggah and Dr Sim personally contributed and handed over mandarin oranges for staff members of the hospital.
