SIBU: A total of 67 children of members of the Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) Sibu Division who excelled in academic performance received study incentives for year 2023 at its premises here today (Oct 14).
Kapitan Lau Sei Kwong, who represented Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, was in attendance to hand over the study incentives.
Speaking at the ceremony, STU Sibu Division chairman Yong Sie Hing said, out of the 67 students, 55 of them were for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), 11 for Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and one for GCE/A Levels.
“By giving these incentives, I hope to increase the motivation of students, especially the members’ children who are still in school, to get excellent results.
In the meantime, Yong said, STU Sibu Division also aimed to distribute more academic incentives to its members’ children next year.
He is confident that the number of incentive recipients will increase next year.
“Last year we distributed to 43 recipients and this year 67 students. For next year (2024), I believe our incentive recipients will increase to 80 or more.
“Regarding financial matter, members do not need to worry because the STU committee members will work even harder to seek for funds, but what is more imperative is that the students must strive to get excellent results,” he added.
Lau, who also spoke, believed that the celebration of this kind of academic incentive ceremony can be a motivation for students to continue to strive to achieve excellence in all fields.
It is hoped that the event like this can continue in the future, he said, adding the existence of STU is no stranger to educators in Bumi Kenyalang.
STU, he noted, was created to help protect the welfare of teachers and to be a liaison between teachers and superiors to ensure the well-being and successful implementation of education policies in schools.
He hoped that many more educators in Sarawak will join STU so that the union has generational continuity.
At present, STU Sibu Division has more than 3,000 members including from Kanowit, Selangau and Mukah.
