KUCHING: The success of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership over the past eight years has been highly impressive, with various initiatives introduced to assist the Sarawakians and advance the region’s development.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said many aspirations and initiatives introduced by Abang Johari have been realised and executed smoothly.
“Therefore, whether we visit urban or rural areas, public support for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) under his leadership is very encouraging.
“This is something I did not anticipate, and I have been involved in politics for a long time,” he said when speaking to reporters after the ‘Legacy 360 preview: Business Forum for a Sustainable Future’ at the Sheraton Hotel here on Monday (Jan 13).
Reflecting on Abang Johari’s appointment as chief minister in 2017, Abdul Karim noted the challenges he faced after taking over the leadership from the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, who served as chief minister for two years.
“Taking over the position was not easy, especially as the Covid-19 pandemic hit shortly after he became chief minister.
“At that time, we knew many people faced various challenges, such as job losses, stalled projects, and restricted movement.
“However, he managed to organise and provide various forms of assistance to the people of Sarawak. The state government at the time allocated a significant amount of reserved funds to help the people,” he explained.
Initiatives such as the Sarawak Sovereign Fund, the establishment of 12 development agencies like the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) and the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), were also introduced to implement rapid and sustainable development, significantly benefiting the Sarawakians
“I hope that all the efforts Abang Johari has undertaken for the benefit of Sarawak will be appreciated, and I would like to congratulate him on the eighth anniversary of his leadership.
“I also hope he remains in good health to continue leading us for many years to come,” he added.
