KUCHING: A delegation from the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Parliamentary Committee paid a courtesy call to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (Apr 22) to discuss on green energy industry.
The visit was part of a week-long working trip to Malaysia in an effort to strengthen relations between parliaments, obtain first-hand information and views, and garner political support for the Malaysia-EFTA Economic Partnership Agreement (MEEPA) which was finalized on Apr 11.
Chairman of the EFTA Parliamentary Committee and head of the Icelandic Delegation Grimur Grimsson led the delegation in the courtesy visit at Wisma Bapa Malaysia.
Also present were the head of the Norwegian Delegation Trine Lise Sundnes, head of the Swiss Delegation Thomas Aeschi and head of the Liechtenstein Delegation Sebastian Gassner.
Speaking to reporters, Grimur said the courtesy call on Abang Johari was to discuss the green energy industry.
“We are discussing energy development and production, especially in green energy.
“Sustainability and green energy are the keywords in this regard, including carbon capture as well,” he said.
Meanwhile, Trine Lise said that Norway is also interested in the algae industry being developed in Sarawak, especially for use in green energy.
She said that Norway has a large production of algae in the context of food supply.
“However, in Sarawak, when we visited the biodiversity centre, we also saw more advanced technology related to this, so it is very interesting,” she said.
