KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is highly recognised for his strong Sarawak-centric nationalism within the context of the Malaysian federation, continuing the vision initiated by his predecessor, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

According to political analyst James Chin, Abang Johari’s decision to pull Sarawak out of Barisan Nasional in 2018 and establish the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition remains a defining aspect of his leadership legacy.

“This will be his key legacy; there’s very little doubt about it.”

“The move marked a significant milestone in strengthening Sarawak’s political autonomy and solidifying its state nationalism theme,” he said.

Chin, a professor of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania, Australia, made these comments when contacted by Sarawak Tribune.

Reflecting on Abang Johari’s eight years in leadership, Chin noted that the Premier has announced numerous transformative projects, many of which still require time for full implementation.

“As for his eight years, I’m not sure that you want to celebrate the eight years simply because he has launched several projects; many of them have not come to fruition yet.

“So, these eight years can be seen as a midway point. All the projects announced will probably come to fruition in the next few years,” he added.

Chin also highlighted Abang Johari’s commitment to realizing the shared vision he and Adenan held for Sarawak: to become Malaysia’s leading state with the highest level of autonomy.

“His state nationalism theme is very popular with the people in Sarawak, and his overall legacy will be measured by how much autonomy he can secure from the government and, of course, how Sarawak develops when he leaves office.

“I expect him to stay on for a few more years to see the key projects through, but as I said, eight years is a midway point because his legacy is still ongoing,” he concluded.
