Over 200 for CMS Borneo Junior Open Championship

KUCHING: More than 200 young players from 10 countries are vying for honours in the ongoing 3rd CMS Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship 2017 at Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya here from July 7 to 11.

The five-day event is organised by the Squash Racquet Association of Sarawak (SRAS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports through Sarawak Sports Corporation and Sarawak Sports Council.

Sponsored by Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad, the event for the third consecutive year and had attracted players aged from below 11 and 19 coming from Australia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Singapore and host Malaysia.

The Malaysian players are from Federal Territories, Selangor, Kedah, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Terengganu, Sabah and host Sarawak.

The event is divided into the various categories namely Boys & Girls Under 11 Open, Boys & Girls Under 13 Open, Boys & Girls Under 15 Open, Boys & Girls Under 17 Open and Boys & Girls Under 19 Open

The format is based on Main rounds in which the top 16 matches will be played to best of five games with the scoring is 11 points –PAR (Point-A-Rally) following the WSF Rules of World Singles Game.

Depending on the number of entries, the Squash Racquet Association of Sarawak (SRAS) will decide on either a knock-out system or Circuit Format.

According to the organising committee chairman, Emmanuel David the response towards this year’s event is encouraging with many participants from overseas are taking.

He said the players had already arrived here since Thursday.

The organising committee led by Emmanuel paid a courtesy visit to the office of Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad’s group managing director, Dato’ Richard Curtis at Wisma Mahmud in Jalan Petanak recently.

Through the kind support and sponsorship from CMSB, the company had contributed a total of RM253,328 for the past seven years through the Sarawak Squash Junior Development Programme which main objective is to provide a good avenue for young players to engage in healthy activities especially in squash.

Members of the public are invited to the players in action during the competition free of charge.
