MIRI: A father and son have been placed under police custody after they allegedly snatched a handphone belonging to an Indonesian man here yesterday.

In the 1am incident, the cobblers, aged 51 and 29, snatched the handphone from their victim who was sitting at a table outside a shop at North Yu Seng Road.

According to Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, the 42-year-old victim was having a video call conversation with his son when one of the suspects grabbed his handphone and fled off on a motorcycle with an accomplice.

However, the victim gave chase and apprehended one of the suspects. A scuffle ensued, which attracted the attention of members of the public who rushed over to help.

With their help, one of the suspects was successfully apprehended, while the other fled.

He was detained several minutes later by the police, who soon found the robbers were a father and his son.

The case is being investigated under Section 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for robbery.
