SIBU: Sibu is a safe place to live in, said Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit.
He said although crime activities could not be completely avoided, the crime rate here was still under control.
“Crime will inevitably happen but our men play an important role in maintaining public peace and harmony.
“Do not fret as my men are always ready and we have enough strength to control the crime activities in Sibu,” he added in his speech during the handing over of duties by former Sibu district deputy police chief Martin Koo to head of Management Unit of Sibu district police headquarters ASP Kamaruddin Jaafar at the Sibu district police headquarters here yesterday.
Kamaruddin will be the acting deputy police chief for the time being.
Koo has been transferred to the Sarawak police headquarters in Kuching to be the ACP in charge of administration.
Stanley witnessed the handing over of documents from Koo to Kamaruddin at the ceremony.
On behalf of his entire troop, he also conveyed his congratulations and well wishes to Koo.
In his speech at the ceremony, Koo thanked all sectors for their support during his five-and-a-half years of duty in Sibu.
He described Stanley as a calm and caring chief.
“He cares greatly for the welfare of all his members and always acts fast in response to cases.
“All of you here are very lucky to have such a good police chief,” said Koo, adding that he had served with five Sibu police chiefs including Stanley.
He also described his transfer to the Sarawak police headquarters in Kuching as a ‘blessing’ as he could now be with his family.
“It has already been 11 years that I have been on duty away from my family, and this is my chance to be with them,” Koo said.
He began his duties as Sibu District deputy police chief on February 3, 2014.
Before that, he was the Dalat district police chief for five years and six months.
Koo has also served with Sri Aman district police headquarters and a few other places in the state.
Hailing from Johor, the 57-year-old cop is married to a local Sarawakian.
