Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, the operating company of the State’s Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS), was recently the winner of the 7th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Environmental (CMEA) 2016 Award under the Large Enterprise (services and other sectors) category.
The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak, in collaboration with the Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), has been jointly organising the CMEA event since 2001. The Award is held biennially and is recognised as the premier environmental award for small, medium and large enterprises as well as local authorities, in the State.
Trienekens’ Chairman, Jurgen Pickenhagen was present to receive the award from Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg at the presentation dinner held at the Imperial Hotel here on March 1.
“We are deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award,” said Pickenhagen. “It is a significant achievement that highlights our company’s strong commitment and on-going dedication to contribute towards a clean and healthy Sarawak for the people of Sarawak. We are sincerely grateful to the State Government for recognising our efforts.”
He added that in this increasingly environmentally-conscious world, businesses have a growing ethical and moral obligation to protect the environment.
“Indeed, the theme of the 2016 Sarawak Chief Minister’s Environmental Award (CMEA), “Environmental Stewardship Begins With Me” has never been so opportune as it is our (whether as a business, or an individual’s) responsibility to protect the environment.
We at Trienekens have always worked along a similar objective, by promoting green practices to our team members and encouraging our business associates – including our contractors, suppliers and customers; to do the same.”
The company, said Pickenhagen, views staff awareness and participation essential in the understanding of basic environment and human rights, besides also fostering a greater sense of responsibility for proactive environmental citizenship. By actively involving team members in environmental education, awareness and training programmes, the company hopes to effectively provide a forum for sharing ideas and findings with team members as well as creating a better sense of environmental ownership.
Consistent with its business operations, Trienekens has also been actively promoting better environmental awareness and education amongst children through its special recycling programme, which introduces the 5Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Repair) concept to participating primary and secondary schools. Ultimately, the programme aims to inculcate habitual sorting of solid waste at source by engaging both students and staff to practice segregating their school waste from the point-of-generation.
“With this award, we are encouraged to work closer with all the relevant agencies and members of the community to deliver better and higher standards of waste management services. Together, we can invest in a greener and cleaner future for Sarawak,” Pickenhagen concluded.
