THE Water Supply Project in Meradong District is currently at the design stage, said Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing (GPS-Meradong) (pic).

The project was scheduled for completion in two years from the start of its construction, thus he called for remedial measures to be taken to alleviate the acute shortage of water supply in the meantime.

“Once the project is completed, it will solve the water problem for Meradong District and its surrounding areas,” he told the August House when debating the motion of appreciation to TYT’s opening address yesterday.

He also thanked the Ministry of Utilities for setting up a five-million litre per day (MLD) water treatment plant to overcome the serious water shortage in the locality as well as to supplement the existing Temudak Treatment Plant which is producing 12 MLD at the moment.

Apart from that, he also mentioned several issues faced by the state Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) on the ground which he hoped the Ministry can look into seriously.

The issues are lack of manpower in JBALB Meradong especially the technical staff identifying and locating leaking pipe, lack of transportation for the said technical staff, as well as existing AC pipes or PVC pipes in Meradong  which are too old and cannot take high preassure.

“These pipes are prone to bursting and this will only get worse when the upgrading works are completed resulting in higher water pressure for them to cope with. Therefore all these aging pipes need to be replaced,” he elaborated.

Ding also spoke on a proposed project to improve the Bintangor Waterfront few years back, which was postponed due to technical issues.

Ding claimed few Sarawak government projects were given because the seat was represented by the opposition in the previous two terms.

He appealed to the chief minister to allocate fund to improve and upgrade Bintangor Waterfront.

He said Bintangor town needed to be made attractive as the only town for the local folk to seek recreation and leisure.
