JULAU: A total of 112 students and lecturers from community colleges in Sarawak participated in a Community College Volunteer Brigade Programme (BriSK) at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Julau recently.
According to the Department of Polytechnic Education and Community Colleges (JPPKK) Student Recruitment and Development division director Wan Mohamad Nasir Wan Abdul Rahman, the programme can enhance cooperation and volunteerism among community college students in the state.
“The commitment of students and lecturers in this event has shown that BriSK’s mission – to encourage, educate, and guide students towards volunteerism through community service – is successful,” he said in his speech read by Sarikei Community College director and Sarawak BriSK chairperson Rosilawati Mohd Rasol.
He also suggested the event be expanded to meet the goal of making community colleges a volunteer hub globally.
The BriSK@School programme currently targets volunteerism activities based on knowledge sharing or knowledge transfer to the local communities.
The one-day programme, which involved Sarikei Community College, Kuching Community College, Betong Community College, Mas Gading Community College, Santubong Community College and Miri Community College, also served a platform to promote community colleges to the locals.
Among the activities carried out were Fun English, mural painting, bread making courses, Microsoft Excel courses, landscape work, ferro-cement work, electrical
wiring and cleaning of the school area.
