Bushfires burn nearly 10 acres

MIRI: Firefighters in this division have been battling bushfires that have torched dozens of land areas here since the dry season began last month.

Today, nearly 10 acres of land are reportedly burnt following the bushfires.

Firemen from both Lopeng and Miri fire stations were deployed to battle the bushfires since early this morning.

At least six bushfires were detected, namely in Kuala Baram, Kampung Bidayuh in Taman Tunku (one acre); Camp Sri Miri (army camp, of which one acre of land nearby the area is burned); Pulau Melayu (three acres), Jalan Lopeng Tengah and SK Lutong.

Fifty army recruits were also mobilised to assist the fire personnel during their efforts to put out the fire ravaging an area near the army camp this afternoon.

Fortunately, no properties were reportedly destroyed so far.

Meanwhile, at Similajau National Park, 32 firemen from three fire stations were deployed to the area to battle the raging bushfires which were reported to have destroyed nine acres of land since six days ago.

The operation which started at 8.30am today involved Similajau, Bintulu and Tatau fire stations.

It was understood that the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) personnel were also mobilised to the park.

According to the operation spokesperson, they are using the relay pumping method to battle the fires.
