KUCHING: Sarawak is planning to build three-in-one fuel stations that can provide petrol, hydrogen and electricity for vehicles.

Abang Johari

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said that discussions on the project had been held.

“This involved cooperation between the state government, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC),” he told reporters after launching the 4.0 Muda Hashim Garage Sale at Jalan Kulas, here Saturday night.

He said the idea of having these types of fuel stations was in line with the government’s Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0).

“Two months ago we started using an electric bus, and next month or by early May we will have hydrogen buses.

Similar hydrogen buses may run in Kuching.

“With that Sarawak would be the first in Southeast Asia to have hydrogen-powered buses,” he said, adding for a start, Kuching would have three such buses.
“To have electric and hydrogen buses is not only for tourism purposes. We want buses that are environment-friendly.

“We are tapping into the types of energy that do not pollute the environment. We need to protect the environment for our future generations,” he stressed.

He said that is why Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has invested in a pilot hydrogen production plant and refueling station project.

“We are also looking at conventional buses that run on petrol or electricity or hydrogen,” he said.

He said countries like China and Germany are already using electric buses and France is using electric cars.

“Last time, when I said I wanted to have hydrogen and electric buses, people said I was very weird … but today I have proven and delivered to you what I’ve promised.”
