Education Ministry kicks off ‘Jom Masuk IPT 2019’ campaign

KUCHING: The federal ministry of education kicked off the Sarawak zone university recruitment campaign dubbed “Jom Masuk IPT 2019” at a mall here today.

The signature campaign conducted by the ministry yearly is aimed at encouraging SPM and STPM leavers to take up courses in various higher learning institutions in the country.

Among others, the programme aims to alert SPM and STPM leavers on the various criteria for admission into national institutes of higher learning like costs, duration and syllabus for foundation programmes, diploma courses and first degree undergraduate courses.

The programme, which is the fifth of its kind launched nationwide, has 50 exhibitors comprising government agencies, non-governmental organisations, public universities, polytechnics, community colleges and skills training institutes.

Guest of honour and director general of Higher Learning for the Ministry of Education Datin Paduka Ir Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir officiated at the launch today. She commended the host Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) on its meticulous preparations for the event.

She reminded the organisers and vendors to be mindful of the variety of clients they will encounter during the carnival and to be prepared to help all of them choose the next step in their education.

“What we want is that this carnival becomes a one-stop centre to assist would be students transition from school to any one of the public institutes of higher learning in Malaysia.” Hamsiah said in her speech.

The carnival is also an exhibition with numerous activities conducted by the different vendors for their targeted clients and visitors.

“We will see many activities carried out during the carnival with stakeholders and clients such as a forum on marketability of students and how they should choose courses,” she added.

“We have also invited headmasters and teachers from secondary schools in Sarawak with the intention to promote life-long learning and the possibilities therein to keep them abreast with the latest changes in academic requirements to qualify for tertiary or vocational education,” Hamsiah explained.

The two-day event will also see other activities such as free health checks by Unimas medical faculty, free counselling as well as cultural shows and dances.

Among those present at the launch were Unimas board chairman Tan Sri Datuk Panglima Sulong Mat Jeraie, Unimas vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohammad Kadim Suaidi, Unimas deputy vice chancellor of student affairs and alumni Professor Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman, Unimas deputy vice chancellor of innovation and research Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, Unimas vice chancellor of academics and international affairs Professor Dr Fasihuddin Badruddin Ahmad and Unimas Registrar Henry Tening Sengeng.
