KUCHING: A hawker selling fast food only realised that she was a victim of an identity theft after she received a letter from Companies Commission of Malaysia to compound her with a fine of RM5,000 under the Companies Act for failing to file in her annual statement of accounts as a director of a company.

The hawker who lives at a KMC flat in Jalan Ban Hock here told Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau chief Wilfred Yap that she never own any share in any company or has ever been appointed as a director.

Yap then accompanied the woman, a fast food seller to meet an officer of Companies Commission of Malaysia to assist her to lodge a formal complaint for a proper investigation to be made.

He then followed up and monitored the situation closely until the predicament facing the hawker was completed and the actual culprit prosecuted and charged under the Companies Act and other relevant laws and regulations.

Yap also said cases involving identity theft was becoming quite prevalent these days and to assist the public, SUPP Public Complaints Bureau is issuing a few steps to take to protect and prevent your identity from being stolen.

  1. Share minimal personal information on social media;
  2. Do not give personal information and photocopy of identity card when dealing with an unfamiliar party;
  3. Do not click on any link in suspicious e-mail, messages or website;
  4. Set social media account to private mode and only add people you know;
  5. Do not be greedy and stop communicating when a deal is too good to be true.
