KUCHING: A total of 618 telecommunication towers have been developed in Sarawak as of this month, noting steady progress in the state’s connectivity efforts.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi attributed the success to collaboration with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) under the Sarawak Linking Urban, Rural, and Nation (SALURAN) programme.

This initiative complements federal efforts led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“One perfect instance is that if you go to Bruit Island in Daro, the internet connectivity is improved, and I went there before the opening of the Muara Lassa Bridge.

“While several areas still necessitate improvement regarding their internet connectivity, I firmly believe that we are progressing along the right path,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the Hari Raya Open House celebration, hosted by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today (Apr 1).

He added that most of the towers are physically completed and operational, and integrating the Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology to allow multiple service providers to share infrastructure efficiently.

“This initiative is designed to enhance the activities being carried out by MCMC,” he said.

He added that the Sarawak government has approved an additional RM450 million to upgrade electricity infrastructure in five areas—Lundu, Betong, Lubok Antu, Sungai Asap, and Lawas.

“However, that will transpire much later in the foreseeable future. It is clear that the state has been dedicating substantial resources to bolster the electricity infrastructure throughout the region,” he stated.
