SIBU: The Sarawak Cabinet has finalised the list of new councillors for the 24 local authorities (PBT) in the state.

The list is currently awaiting approval from the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

According to the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, once they receive approval from Wan Junaidi, the new appointments can be officially made.

“Once approval is granted, we will determine the date for the swearing-in ceremony.

“We are considering whether to hold a single, simultaneous ceremony or conduct individual appointments across more than 20 local authorities,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters at the incentive handover ceremony for newlyweds, newborn babies, and education assistance for the Pelawan constituency at a renowned hotel here last night.

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, said that councillors who have served for nine years or more will not be reappointed.

“However, council chairpersons who have not yet reached nine years of service will be retained, including their deputies,” he said.

He also confirmed that the chairman of the Sarikei District Council has opted not to continue his tenure.

“As a result, a new appointment will be made, which is an exception to the rule.

“Meanwhile, mayors and chairpersons, such as those from the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), the Limbang District Council, and the Mayor of Miri City Council, will be reappointed for a one-year term despite having served beyond nine years.

“For other new appointments, the service term will last three years, ending on March 31, 2028,” he added.
