KUCHING: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will deploy undercover officers as bus passengers to monitor and detect traffic violations by bus drivers during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.

RTD director Norizan Jili said the initiative is part of Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA), which runs from Mar 24 to Apr 8.

“For public transport, we are implementing undercover surveillance by placing RTD officers as bus passengers to catch errant drivers in the act.

“This method has proven effective in previous years, revealing common offenses such as using mobile phones while driving and speeding,” he said after attending a Road Safety Advocacy programme at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal on Thursday (Mar 27).

He added that the undercover operation will complement routine patrols and inspections, conducted in collaboration with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK).

“AADK officers will also carry out on-the-spot drug tests on bus drivers to ensure they are fit to drive. So far, all tests have returned negative results,” he said, noting that such checks will continue beyond the festive season.

RTD also encourages public involvement in reporting traffic violations, including illegal manoeuvres such as the dangerous ‘P’ turn. Reports can be submitted via the MyJPJ app or through email at e-aduan@JPJ or aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my.
