KUCHING: Sarawak’s women’s kabaddi team is focused on future improvements after securing second place at the National Kabaddi Championship in Melaka.

Despite a strong performance with three wins and one loss, the team is determined to overcome Kuala Lumpur, the gold medallists from last year’s Malaysia Games (SUKMA), in upcoming tournaments.

Competing at the Youth and Sports Department multipurpose hall in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, Sarawak’s 12-member team earned six points from their four round-robin matches.

They began the tournament with a 34-25 victory over Perak, followed by a 36-24 win against Negeri Sembilan.

A narrow 34-33 win over Penang put them in a strong position, but they suffered a 15-37 loss to Kuala Lumpur, who topped the competition with eight points.

Despite the loss to Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak team manager Muttiah Pillai Sinnathambi expressed confidence in the team’s performance and progress since SUKMA.

“Somehow, we can see that this time our team performed well.

“We are finding solutions and enhancing our performance to overcome Kuala Lumpur in the future,” he told Sarawak Tribune on Thursday.

He noted that while the women’s team did not fare well at last year’s SUKMA, where they finished fifth, the results from Melaka show significant improvement.

“The performance has been maintained.

“This is our first appearance after SUKMA, and in between, there were a few tournaments organised in West Malaysia, but we didn’t participate due to short notice and other preparations,” he added.
