MUKAH: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah wants the contractor involved in the Batang Paloh Bridge construction to get his act together.

In issuing the warning, he said the project which is 96 days behind is close to becoming a sick project.

Uggah insisted that the contractor bring in additional machinery and put in longer hours to ensure the bridge is completed by March next year.

He expressed concern that the RM298.4-million project had been delayed by 96 days.

“It is one of our problematic bridge projects. It is close to becoming what we will categorise as a sick project.

“When a big project like this is delayed, the people will vent their anger and frustration on their elected representatives and the government,” he said.

He aired his disappointment after a progress briefing by Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris and the contractor’s representative today.

Uggah said that PWD would assist in working out a new work plan to help the contractor speed up the construction.

“The 1.7-kilometre long two-lane single carriageway bridge has to date achieved a physical progress of 75.25 per cent.

“The schedule is for 84.63 per cent. I plan to visit the construction site again in July this year to monitor its progress,” he added.
