MIRI: Sarawak’s first Velosolutions Pump Track has officially opened at Taman Bulatan Miri today, marking a milestone in Malaysia’s extreme sports landscape.
The RM600,000 track, stretching 251 metres, is the first of its kind in the country.
It is expected to boost the local cycling culture while attracting international riders and competitions.
Officiating at the launch, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, highlighted the significance of the new facility in positioning Miri on the global BMX and urban sports map.
“When construction began in November last year, there were only 1,057 Velosolutions Pump Tracks worldwide.
“Today, there are 1,187, and Miri is proudly part of this global community,” Ting said.
Built to international standards with the expertise of four expatriate specialists, the pump track is designed to cater to riders of all skill levels.
From young beginners to professional athletes, the facility aims to foster a new generation of cycling enthusiasts.
“This track is more than just an infrastructure project – it is a platform for nurturing talent.
“With the rise of pump track racing globally, we now have the potential to develop homegrown athletes who can compete in international events, including the Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championships,” Ting added.
Beyond sports, the pump track is expected to bring economic and social benefits to Miri.
It is set to attract cyclists from across Sarawak, Brunei and beyond, boosting tourism and local businesses.
“Cycling is already gaining traction in Sarawak, with our athletes competing at the Olympic level.
“This facility will further inspire our youth, promoting an active lifestyle while reducing screen time.
“It also provides an avenue for international events, strengthening Miri’s status as a sporting hub,” Ting said.
Plans are already in motion for competitions, with a major event expected in May.
The facility’s opening also aligns with the city’s broader vision of fostering a sustainable sports culture and community engagement.
“In launching this pump track, we are not just opening a venue; we are starting a movement.
“This is a vision for a brighter future for cycling in Miri, Sarawak and Malaysia,” Ting concluded.
