There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish

–  Michelle Obama

Every year on March 8th, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day. It is a time to recognise the achievements of women and to reflect on the challenges they continue to face.

In Sarawak for example, women from diverse ethnic backgrounds—Dayak, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Melanau, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and other indigenous groups—play crucial roles in shaping the state’s social, economic, and political landscape. Yet, the path to gender parity remains an ongoing struggle, with unique challenges faced by women in both urban and rural settings.

Progress in Women’s Rights and Gender Equality

Over the years, Sarawak has made notable strides in advancing women’s rights. The state has witnessed an increase in female participation in education, politics, and the workforce.

More women are holding leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. Initiatives such as gender-responsive policies and women-centric programs have contributed to narrowing the gender gap, empowering women to pursue careers and education opportunities previously limited to men.

Moreover, the Sarawak government has taken progressive steps to support women’s development, including the establishment of women’s councils and committees that advocate for gender-sensitive policies.

These efforts align with Malaysia’s broader commitment to gender equality, as outlined in national development plans and international conventions.

Challenges Faced by Women

Despite significant progress, women continue to face challenges that hinder full gender parity. In rural and indigenous communities, access to education and healthcare remains a concern, limiting opportunities for women and girls to realize their full potential. Economic disparities, cultural expectations, and gender-based violence also pose obstacles to achieving true equality.

Women entrepreneurs and workers, particularly in informal sectors, often encounter barriers such as limited financial support, wage gaps, and unequal career advancement opportunities. Additionally, traditional gender roles persist, sometimes restricting women from fully participating in decision-making processes within households and communities.

Notable Sarawakian Women Who Inspire Change

Sarawak is home to many remarkable women who have contributed significantly to society. Among them is Dato Sri Doris Sophia Brodie, the first Dayak woman to hold the position of Deputy Speaker in the Dewan Negara, exemplifying female leadership in politics.

Another inspiring figure is Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, a prominent politician and advocate for women’s rights and education. Her tireless efforts have led to improved access to education and healthcare for rural communities.

In education, advocacy, and community development, Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu has played a vital role in championing social welfare, healthcare, and the economic empowerment of women in Sarawak. As a political leader and social advocate, she has worked towards improving rural development, promoting education, and advancing women’s rights.

Women as Guardians of Sarawak’s Natural Heritage

Sarawak’s rich biodiversity and forests are deeply intertwined with the livelihoods of indigenous women, who have long been custodians of traditional ecological knowledge. However, deforestation, climate change, and unsustainable development threaten their way of life.

Empowering women with resources, education, and leadership roles in conservation initiatives can ensure that their knowledge contributes to sustainable forest management and biodiversity preservation.

Strengthening eco-tourism, community-led conservation, and sustainable agriculture initiatives will provide economic opportunities while protecting Sarawak’s invaluable ecosystems.

Local Initiatives Supporting Women’s Empowerment

Various initiatives in Sarawak aim to uplift and empower women. Organizations such as the Women and Family Department of Sarawak (JWKS) offer programmes focusing on entrepreneurship, skills training, and leadership development.

Women’s cooperatives and micro-financing schemes have also been instrumental in supporting female entrepreneurs, particularly in rural areas.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS) work tirelessly to address gender-based violence, providing support services and advocacy to protect women’s rights. Educational campaigns continue to raise awareness on gender equality and empower women to assert their roles in society.

A Call to Action: Supporting Gender Equality in Sarawak

International Women’s Day is not just about celebration—it is a call to action for all Sarawakians to contribute towards gender equality.

  1. Support Women’s Initiatives: Encourage and participate in programs that uplift women, whether through education, entrepreneurship, or leadership training.
  2. Advocate for Policy Changes: Push for laws and policies that promote gender equity, workplace inclusivity, and protections against discrimination.
  3. Challenge Gender Stereotypes: Promote equal opportunities for all, ensuring that societal norms do not limit the aspirations of women and girls.
  4. Raise Awareness: Engage in discussions, share stories of inspiring women, and educate the younger generation on the importance of equality.

By working together, we can create a more equitable society where every woman in Sarawak has the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and lead. Let this International Women’s Day be a reminder that gender equality benefits everyone, and the journey towards it requires collective effort.

Happy International Women’s Day!
