LUNDU: In an inspiring move to foster environmental awareness and support underprivileged students, UCSI University Sarawak Campus recently hosted the ‘Youth-Friendly Recycling Corner: Bright Minds, Green Actions and Back-to-School Support’ programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sematan.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Mukvinder Kaur Sandhu, who officiated the event yesterday, highlighted UCSI University’s significant global achievements, including its recent ranking among the top 265 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2025, placing it within the top one per cent globally.
She also emphasised the university’s commitment to sustainability, with a global ranking of fourth place for environmental sustainability, as well as its recognition in 2018 as a Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability.
The community-oriented initiative brought together 100 students from Years Four, Five and Six, school teachers, as well as UCSI University students and staff, highlighting the power of collaboration between educational institutions and local communities.
The programme, thoughtfully curated by UCSI University’s Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management and involving students from the Diploma in Event Management and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Event and Tourism Management courses, aims to raise awareness of environmental sustainability.
It also encourages young learners to engage in recycling activities through practical and creative approaches that introduced them to the importance of recycling and its integration into daily life.
One of the standout moments of the programme was when Year Six students painted old tyres, transforming them into colourful, reusable items for the school’s new recycling corner.
A total of 150 school backpacks, donated by Pharez Supply and Printing Company, were also distributed to ease the back-to-school burden for underprivileged children in the area.
The programme is part of UCSI University’s commitment to experiential learning, providing students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to real-world community initiatives.
They honed their event planning and leadership skills while meaningfully contributing to the local community and reinforcing the importance of social responsibility and environmental stewardship.
