MIRI: Mercure Miri City Centre has set a new benchmark as the first and only hotel in Miri to fully embrace the Malaysia Hotel Reduce Sugar Campaign.

The campaign is a nationwide initiative led by the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Tourism Productivity Nexus.

Supported by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and the Malaysia Budget Hotel Association (MyBHA), the campaign aims to promote healthier dining experiences by encouraging hotels to reduce excessive sugar usage in their food and beverage offerings.

In a statement released today, it was revealed that hotels consume significant amounts of sugar annually, with mid-range hotels using 1,600 to 2,400 kilogrammes (kg) and large hotels 3,600 to 4,800kg.

Malaysia’s low sugar prices contribute to excessive consumption, which is linked to alarming health issues.

These including seven million adults living with Type 2 diabetes, over five million people suffering from chronic kidney disease and diabetes (16 per cent of the population), and a rise in childhood diabetes, affecting one in three children.

As part of this initiative, Mercure Miri City Centre has proactively adjusted its culinary practices to provide balanced and nutritious meals without compromising taste.

It aligns with Malaysia’s broader efforts to curb lifestyle diseases through healthier eating habits.

By participating in the campaign, Mercure Miri City Centre hopes to set a positive example for other hotels in Sarawak, encouraging more establishments in the hospitality industry to adopt similar health-conscious measures.
