NIAH: A family of eight was advised to relocate after strong winds tore off a large part of the roof of their home at Rh Andrew Abak, Jalan SK Rancangan Sebatok on Wednesday (Feb 26).

The incident happened following heavy rain and strong winds that began around 5 pm.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Batu Niah station were dispatched to the scene following a distress call at 10.25 pm.

Upon arrival, they found that 70 per cent of the house had been damaged, particularly the first floor and living room.

No injuries were reported, but the team instructed the family to move to a safer location while awaiting further assistance.

The team carried out a thorough inspection to assess potential hazards and informed Sarawak Energy Berhad (SESCO) to cut off the electricity supply to prevent further risks.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team wrapped up their operation and returned to the station at 10.54 pm.
