SIBU: A project to document the history and legacy of Balang Balai Nyabong, a warrior from Katibas, Song, is in the pipeline to provide a deeper insight into his legacy.
Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan said the idea arose following a recent seminar commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Kapit Peace Agreement (1924-2024), which highlighted a major conflict in 1924 between the Katibas community and colonial forces led by Charles Brooke.
He said the proposed book not only aims to honour the memory of the Katibas hero, widely known as Balang, but also to correct some of the history that has been written.
“This initiative seeks to celebrate Balang as a symbol of courage and resilience in defending his homeland.
“This (the project) is also crucial as much of the history we rely on today was written by Westerners, and it may not fully capture the truth,” he said in a press conference after attending the Task Force Meeting on the History of Warrior Balang Balai Nyabong at a local hotel here last night (Jan 25).
Lidam added that historical records mentioned four expeditions launched by external forces during James Brooke’s era to conquer Katibas, all of which were thwarted by Balang and the local community, who stood firm in defending their territory.
“As a descendant of the Katibas lineage, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to revisit and document Balang’s story,” he stressed.
Lidam, who is the patron of the project, said it is expected to take two years to complete, involving extensive research, verification of facts, and the documentation of artefacts and historical materials.
“We will work with experienced writers, including Professor Datuk Nelson Ilan Mersat and Dr Philip Beginda, with the Song Graduate Club (SGC) serving as the secretariat.
“Apart from the historical book, plans are also underway to erect a memorial in Katibas to honour Balang’s contributions,” he added.
Lidam urged the people of Katibas, especially Balang’s descendants, to come forward with any information, artefacts, or stories related to the warrior.
“We have identified some of Balang’s descendants who are still alive and possess knowledge of his life and deeds. Our goal is to gather details, including artefacts, his place of residence, and his significant contributions to defending Katibas,” he said.
Lidam also noted that rewriting this history is vital to ensuring future generations remain connected to their heritage.
“This effort is crucial because today’s generation has only a limited understanding of our history, and future generations may know nothing at all.
“It is our duty to document and preserve this history for the benefit of those who come after us,” he said.
