31 foreigners nabbed in immigration sweep

KUCHING: Thirty-one foreign nationals were arrested in a series of coordinated raids held across four districts recently.

According to the Sarawak Immigration Department, all of the detainees were caught for overstaying, lacking valid travel documents, and failing to secure proper permits to stay in Malaysia.

The operations were launched at 12 locations following public tip-offs and intelligence gathered by the department. Raids were carried out at eateries, rental rooms and a homestay in Bau, Kota Samarahan, Siniawan, Batu Kawa and Serian.

Between Thursday (Jan 23) and early Friday morning (Jan 24), the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Unit inspected the documents of 91 individuals of various nationalities, of whom 31 were taken into custody.

The largest group, consisting of 12 individuals, was arrested at a homestay in Bau early Friday morning.

In addition, an employer has been issued a notice to provide a statement to assist in investigations.

All of the detainees are being investigated under the Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

In light of this, the public is encouraged to report any information regarding the presence of undocumented migrants in their areas through online channels or directly to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
