KUCHING: Sarawak must build a robust economy and regain its economic rights to ensure progress.

This was among the key points agreed upon during a dialogue session, ‘A New Approach To Federalism’, with Prof Dr James Chin, held at the House of the Epiphany here yesterday (Jan 25).

Chin is a Professor of Asian Studies and the Founding Director of the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania.

The session gathered a group of concerned citizens convened to deliberate on the future of Sarawak within the Malaysian Federation.

The discussion highlighted key priorities for the state, centring on economic rights, autonomy, and education.

Participants also called for reforms to enable the state to manage its own educational policies and safeguard its unique identity and security.

The discussion also touched on the complexities of federal-state relations.

Participants noted a lack of understanding among many Sarawakians about the legal framework governing these relationships.

They also stressed the need for greater public education on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and its implications for Sarawak’s autonomy.
