KUCHING: The long-delayed Petra Jaya Hospital project, which began in 2013, is now on track to open its doors by the first quarter of 2026.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said that the project is nearly 82 per cent complete and progressing smoothly.

“The construction is expected to be completed by August 2025.

“However, the hospital will require some time for commissioning and preparation before operations can begin, which we anticipate will happen in the first quarter of 2026,” the Sibuti MP told the media during the ‘BeBAs’ (Clean, Smoke-Free Premises) Walkabout Programme here yesterday (Jan 24).

The hospital, which had previously been classified as a ‘sick project’, is now showing steady progress under enhanced supervision and commitment from the authorities.

Spanning 41 acres, the eight-story facility will feature 300 beds, 1,569 car parking spaces, and 1,283 motorcycle parking spaces, aiming to address healthcare and accessibility needs in the region.

In October 2021, then-Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob directed the project to be handed over to a rescue contractor, with the Public Works Department (PWD) tasked with ensuring its completion by the end of 2024.
