DAVOS, SWITZERLAND: Australian metal mining giant Fortescue has committed to investing in green hydrogen energy development in Bintulu, marking a pivotal step forward for Malaysia’s renewable energy ambitions.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the investment following discussions with Fortescue executive chairman and founder Dr Andrew Forrest AO during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 in Davos, Switzerland.
“The Sarawak government has agreed in principle to this initiative, and I have assured that federal incentives and support will be provided to establish Bintulu as a green hydrogen hub,” Anwar said at a press conference concluding his three-day working visit to WEF.
Last Tuesday, Anwar led Malaysia’s delegation in a series of in-person business meetings organised by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
The discussions involved corporate leaders from global giants such as Fortescue, AstraZeneca, DP World, Medtronic, Nestle and Google.
Expanding on the outcomes, Anwar assured that Dubai-based port operator DP World, which is venturing into Sepanggar, Sabah, has secured strong support from the federal government.
“This project positions Sabah as a strategic regional logistics hub. The federal government has communicated full support to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the Sabah government to ensure the project’s success,” Anwar said.
On the same note, Anwar added that Google plans to expand its presence in Malaysia by enhancing its data centre operations in Selangor, a move expected to benefit Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Johor, Penang and Perak.
Discussions at WEF also revolved around leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in sectors such as healthcare and education.
He expressed optimism that these dialogues are crucial for aligning Malaysia with global technological advancements and ensuring sustainable development.
This year marked Anwar’s debut at WEF as Prime Minister since assuming office in 2022.
He attended the forum at the invitation of WEF founder and executive chairman Prof Klaus Schwab.
Accompanied by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, and Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Anwar led Malaysia’s delegation in positioning the nation as a competitive player in the global economy.
