KUCHING: Malaysia aims for Sarawak to become a model for clean energy as the state is advanced in the clean energy industry, especially hydrogen.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this was due to the efforts of the state government in moving towards clean energy.
“The state government is very serious to make Sarawak a leader in environmental conservation.
“That is why we go for clean energy, and now we have been recognise. In fact, a delegation from Malaysian Parliament, which is the Special Select Committee on Environment, Science, and Plantations (JKPK ASSP), stated they want Sarawak to be the model for the whole Malaysia,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the 11th Premier of Sarawak Environmental Award (PSEA) 2023/2024 at Imperial Hotel here, on Wednesday (Jan 22).
Earlier, at a courtesy call on Abang Johari at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on the same day (Jan 22), chairman of JKPK ASSP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim praised Sarawak’s strategic investment in hydrogen technology, emphasising its relevance in addressing future energy demands while reducing reliance on carbon-emitting energy sources.
He said Sarawak has made commendable progress in green energy, achieving significant percentages of energy production from carbon-free sources like hydrogen and hydroelectricity.
“This is an initiative we aim to highlight so that, at the national level, other states can follow Sarawak’s example,” he said.
Additionally, he said the purpose of the delegation’s visit is to exchange views on key environmental and scientific advancements, particularly on Sarawak’s pioneering efforts in hydrogen technology.
“We visited Sarawak to explore developments in hydrogen technology, an area where Sarawak has taken the lead.
“The JKPK ASSP delegation visited the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to receive briefings on hydrogen technology and observe pilot projects, including hydrogen-powered buses and cars,” he said.
