KLANG: Malaysia suffered a heavy defeat against defending champions India in their second Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup group match at the Bayuemas Oval on Tuesday.

The Group A match saw India secure a 10-wicket victory with ease, chasing down the 32-run target without losing much sweat.

The Malaysian team, batting first, was bowled out for just 31 runs in 14.3 overs, with Vaishnavi Sharma claiming five wickets to earn the Player of the Match title.

Trisha Gongadi contributed 27 runs, while G. Kamilini took four wickets, with an additional ‘leg bye’ sealing India’s second win of the tournament, after beating the West Indies two days ago.

Malaysia, who lost to Sri Lanka in their opening game, must beat the West Indies in their last group match today to secure a spot in the Super Six round.

“Approaching this match, we knew we had to be realistic since India is a very strong team. So, we focused on gaining experience and learning positive things from them for our future growth,” captain Nur Dania Syuhada told BERNAMA.

“From the batting side, we have improved compared to the previous game as we stayed longer during the batting this time. We know the West Indies have a few strong batters, so we will aim to bowl to their weaknesses and take our chances for a win,” she added.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies by 81 runs in another Group A match earlier on the same day.

India currently tops the group based on net run rate, despite sharing four points with Sri Lanka, while the West Indies and Malaysia follow in third and fourth place, respectively.

Only the top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six round, where 12 teams will be divided into two groups to compete for semi-final berths.

The bottom-placed teams in the group stage will compete in the 13th-16th place playoff. – BERNAMA
