BAU: A total of 155 residents were forced to evacuate to a temporary shelter following flash floods that struck three villages last night (Jan 21).
The affected villages, namely Kampung Tringgus Matan Nguan, Kampung Tringgus Rabak Rotan, and Kampung Tringgus Bong, were inundated with one-foot-deep floodwaters after continuous heavy rain.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received a distress call at 7.15 pm and dispatched firefighters from Bau station to the scene, about 20km away.
Although no temporary relief centre (PPS) was available, the 38 affected families took refuge at Dewan Kampung Tringgus Bong before returning home once floodwaters receded.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 10.30 pm.
Meanwhile, in Kuching, firefighters from Petra Jaya station were dispatched to Lorong 6, Siol Kandis after receiving a distress call at 10.59 pm.
Flash floods had hit the low-lying area due to heavy rain, causing waters to rise to waist level. However, no evacuation was required as residents had pre-emptively moved to higher ground.
No operation was necessary as the team only carried out safety patrols and flood monitoring at the scene.
Once the floodwaters have receded and the situation went back to normal, the residents returned to their respective homes.
The number of residents and houses affected were not immediately disclosed.
The team ended their operation at 11.40 pm.
