AS Los Angeles grapples with devastating wildfires, renowned horror author Stephen King has ignited a fiery discussion by calling for the cancellation of the 2025 Academy Awards.

The celebrated creator of Misery and The Shining took to the social platform Bluesky to share his perspective, announcing his decision to abstain from voting for the Oscars this year. He argued that the grandeur of Hollywood’s biggest night feels tone-deaf in the shadow of a city in crisis.

In a post that quickly went viral, King wrote, “I hear what you’re saying about the Oscars being a celebration of life and the show must go on, blah-blah-blah. Sure, it makes a degree of sense. But to me, it feels like Nero fiddling while Rome burns — or in this case, wearing designer suits while LA burns.”

The statement sparked an outpouring of opinions from fans and industry insiders alike. Some defended the Oscars as a beacon of hope and resilience, while others sided with King, suggesting the event could redirect its energy to aid relief efforts.

Adding her voice to the conversation, Emmy-winning actress Jean Smart shared a pointed critique. “Instead of a glittering party, why not use the Oscars to give back? Donate profits to wildfire victims or the firefighters risking their lives. That’s the kind of story worth celebrating,” she suggested.

Despite the controversy, the 2025 Oscars ceremony is still set for March 2. As Hollywood debates whether to prioritise glamour or compassion, one thing is clear: this year’s awards season won’t be free of drama — on or off the screen.
