KUCHING: Islamic legal experts have been urged to evaluate and enhance the management of ‘wakaf’ (endowments), particularly in the context of land and assets.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed that such efforts are crucial for strengthening the economic standing of the Muslim community.

He said that exploring resources such as agricultural ‘wakaf’ and land is essential to positively impact the economy of Muslims, adding that these efforts align with ‘syariah’ principles.

“I hope these experts can thoroughly examine this matter and present their findings to the state government so that we can develop solutions for managing Islamic assets in accordance with ‘syariah’ law,” he said.

He said this at a dinner in conjunction with the opening of the Syariah Legal Year Sarawak 2025 (OSLYS 2025) at Riverside Majestic Hotel last night (Jan 21).

Abang Johari added that integrating modern advancements, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and renewable energy technologies, is a key part of Sarawak’s economic framework.

As such, he expressed optimism that these innovations would further elevate the economic standing of the Muslim community.

On governance, the Premier pointed to Sarawak’s administration as an example of inclusivity, drawing parallels with the principles of the Madinah Charter (the first written constitution in Islam).

“The Madinah Charter serves as a model for governing a multiracial and multi-religious society.

“The Prophet Muhammad established true justice to address the challenges of differing views and cultures, and Sarawak reflects that spirit,” he added.

He praised the harmony among Sarawak’s diverse communities, noting that Islamic leaders are respected and trusted by their non-Muslim counterparts.

“From time to time, we must reform our laws to ensure they remain relevant and just for all,” he stressed.

Also present during the event were the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar; Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Office Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya as well as Utility and Telecommunication Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
