KUCHING: Sarawak continues to champion the principles of Maqasid Syariah, ensuring social harmony and stability in its multicultural and multi-religious society.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state’s approach, guided by Islamic jurisprudence, aligns with the objectives of preserving religion, life, intellect, property, and lineage — pillars that underpin governance and societal welfare.

He stressed the significance of Maqasid Syariah in steering Sarawak’s administration towards inclusivity and justice, noting that while the principles may not always be explicitly labeled in policies, their essence is embedded in the state’s governance framework.

“Sarawak, as a unique state with diverse ethnicities and cultures, consistently emphasises harmony among races and religions.

“Thus, Syariah law serves as one of the pillars supporting our social stability and unity, in line with Maqasid Syariah, as explained by Islamic scholars for wisdom ordained by Islam in its laws.

“Its ultimate goal is none other than to realise the well-being of humanity,” he said at a dinner in conjunction with the opening of the Syariah Legal Year Sarawak 2025 (OSLYS 2025) at Riverside Majestic Hotel last night (Jan 21).

Abang Johari also drew parallels between Sarawak’s governance and the philosophies of renowned scholar Ibn Khaldun.

Known for his contributions to economics, sociology, and civilisation, he said Ibn Khaldun highlighted the judiciary’s role in maintaining societal stability and advancing civilization.

“Justice, as Ibn Khaldun articulated, is the foundation of good governance and prosperity.

“His views resonate deeply in today’s era of digitisation and globalisation, where an independent, fair, and authoritative judicial system is crucial to ensure societal stability and the advancement of civilisation,” he added.

He also cited Ibn Khaldun’s tenure as Chief Qadi, during which he introduced legal reforms to combat corruption and favoritism, saying that this highlights the enduring relevance of his principles.

“In the context of Sarawak’s government administration, past and present leaders have undoubtedly drawn guidance from the principles of Maqasid Syariah to be implemented for the welfare of the diverse communities, regardless of race and religion,” he added.
