SIBU: Police arrested two locals and seized a total of 60 imitation firearms worth RM35,000 in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Laras’ on Monday (Jan 20).
Acting on information and public complaints regarding sales of imitation firearms, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) raided a toy store in Wisma Sanyan at about 2.30pm.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said police arrested a man and a woman, aged 29 and 45, namely the owner and employee at the premises.
“Also seized were 25 imitation pistols costing between RM200 and RM300, and 35 rifles costing up to RM1,000.
“The total seizure value is RM35,000. We fear these imitation firearms are used for criminal intimidation and other crimes,” he said in a press conference at Sibu district police headquarters today (Jan 21).
Zulkipli added that the case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960.
The public is advised that possessing, buying or selling any form of imitation firearm is a criminal offence no matter the reason.
If convicted, the offence provides for imprisonment of up to one year, or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both.
Zulkipli also appealed to the public who have information regarding any sales of imitation firearms, to contact the nearest police station for further action.
