SIBU: The Rejang Medical Centre (RMC) invested RM7 million in 2024 to upgrade the third floor of its existing hospital, despite the new one being only three years away, in order to provide better services to the people.
According to its managing director Dr John Tang, it took them almost an entire year to complete the upgrading work.
“So now, we have successfully expanded our services by doubling our haemodialysis service, which is now one of the largest haemodialysis centres in Sarawak, with a full-time nephrologist backup.
“We also have a new specialist outpatient clinic with additional inpatient wards and an upcoming cardiac unit, which shall be ready in the coming months and is the first of its kind in Central Sarawak,” he said.
He said this at the Rejang Medical Centre (RMC) 22nd anniversary dinner, which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee here on Sunday (Jan 19).
He stressed that the highly anticipated cardiac unit will allow them to save more lives of patients with acute onset heart attacks.
“Many of you may be asking, why do we bother to spend so much money and effort to upgrade the current hospital when the new hospital is only three years away?
“This is poor financial planning. But to us, it is about our commitment to our community, our mission to provide the best possible healthcare, and our vision to lead the way in medical advances and to attract young, talented healthcare professionals to Sibu,” he said.
Meanwhile, RMC director Dr Peter Tang said the construction of RMC’s new hospital will take a bit longer than scheduled.
“Initially, when we officiated the groundbreaking ceremony (back in Nov 2023), we said that it would be completed in three years.
“However, due to the soil condition and difficulties faced during the groundwork, we might need another three years from now (2025), so I hope you will be patient,” he said.
Dr Annuar, in his speech, said the new RMC hospital will become a new landmark for Sibu and surely a hospital that Sibu will be proud of.
“I, as part of the Sibu community, will be very proud to have such a well-equipped and sophisticated facility in our RMC.
“We hope that it will take not more than three years. Hopefully, it’s less than three years. We pray hard for it so that it can provide the services to the people of Sibu,” he said.
