BETONG: The tourism project to construct a replica of the fortress of Rentap, the legendary Iban leader who fought against the White Rajah, will begin this year.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the project is awaiting final approval from the relevant authority for its implementation.
“We have a RM16 million fund now ready for its construction at the same spot in Bukit Sadok,” Uggah said at the Betong District Council’s Appreciation Night here last night.
He said tourism will be another sector, besides modern agriculture, that Betong Division aims to develop.
“There is a lot Betong can offer but we need to strategise our development and promotion.”
In this context Uggah said the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) and the Resident’s and District Office, in particular, will have leading roles to play together with the industry players.
They need to come together to identify, develop and strengthen our appeal, from the very old traditional longhouses, our unique culture and traditions, our pristine nature to even some of our farms, he said.
“Betong is now easily reachable through the Pan Borneo Highway and with the completion of the Coastal Trunk Road and the Bebuling STOLport in Spaoh, we can expect more visitors.
“The people themselves from farmers, homestay operators to handicraft and foodstuff producers are in the loop to take advantage, and so is the local business community.
“So everyone must play their part to keep Betong, Spaoh, Debak towns and others more visitor friendly.”
Meanwhile Uggah urged council officers to continue giving their best in serving the people.
“Now with progress and a better standard of living, our people are getting more demanding in their expectations.
“Similarly, as their leaders, we, the elected representatives, also expect top notch service.
“So the council officers should constantly seek to upgrade themselves, reaching out to the latest technologies, knowledge and leadership skills coupled with commitment and discipline,” he said.
Uggah called on everyone to thus be ready to embrace changes and new ways of doing things.
In his speech earlier Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu advised council officers to have high integrity and discipline in dealing with the people.
“Any breach of integrity and discipline will affect their reputation, the council image and service delivery.
“We must always put public interest above our personal interest,” he reminded.
Also present were Betong Resident Richard Micheal Abunawas, BDDA Special Administrative officer Abang Mohamed Abang Turkey and the council secretary Lister Clement Guwie.
