KUCHING: The proposed new Kuching International Airport at Tanjong Embang, Asajaya is set to bring numerous benefits to the region, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.

Promoted as a transformative initiative, the airport is anticipated to foster economic growth, enhance connectivity, advance infrastructure development, and tackle environmental concerns.

“The airport’s construction and subsequent operations are expected to generate substantial job opportunities, benefiting local communities and bolstering employment rates.

“In conjunction with the nearby deep-sea port, it is projected to contribute RM100 billion to the region’s economy, driving economic growth in Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Serian.

“With improved infrastructure, the airport is expected to also attract more tourists, benefiting local businesses and the hospitality industry,” he said in a press statement today (Jan 20).

Gira added that the new airport’s location offers enhanced airspace management, with aircraft operations confined to Malaysian airspace, avoiding logistical challenges with Indonesian territory.

“The airport will feature world-class facilities and services, modeled after Doha’s Hamad International Airport, providing a better travel experience for passengers.

“The development of the airport will be accompanied by improvements in local infrastructure, including roads and public transportation.

“Besides, the airport’s proximity to the deep-sea port will facilitate smoother logistics and trade operations,” he said.

Additionally, the project aligns with Sarawak’s sustainable development goals, incorporating environmentally friendly practices to reduce carbon emissions.

“Overall, the Tanjong Embang airport is expected to significantly enhance the region’s economic prospects, connectivity, and infrastructure, making it a transformative project,” he said.
