KUCHING: The Sarawak government is considering the introduction of sport science programmes at its state-owned universities as part of efforts to develop the state’s sports industry.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Education regarding the initiative.
“We could set up (the sport science programmes) in i-CATS University College or Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.
“And in Swinburne, the global student base could offer opportunities for cultural and sports exchanges. The same goes for Curtin University,” he said.
He said this at a press conference during the opening ceremony of the International Cricket Championship (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 and the newly built Borneo Cricket Ground in Petra Jaya here today (Jan 18).
The Premier mentioned that Sarawak has plenty of sports talent, citing examples such as track and field athlete Bala ‘Kuda’ Ditta and national diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong.
“Even our footballers have potential, but they lack the (proper) environment (to excel),” he said.
Abang Johari also noted the national team for cricket, where the team captain is from Sarawak.
Thus, he said it was important to create the right environment for aspiring athletes.
On a related note, Abang Johari stressed the importance of starting sports development from a young age.
“We must begin with secondary schools, such as sports schools, where we can nurture young athletes. From there, they can choose to advance their skills at the university level,” he said.
