KUCHING: The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, continues to demonstrate its commitment to the development of the local film industry by providing funding and support to industry players.

This commitment is evident in the announcement of a new and first local boxing film in Malaysia, Tumbukan Emas, which will highlight the achievements and life journey of Sarawak’s legendary boxer, Major Sapok Biki, who is also the 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

According to minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the production and development of several local films over the past few years have demonstrated the progress and growth of this industry, which is indeed commendable.

“However this industry has yet to fully mature, therefore to further develop it, we need more individuals like Kamek Empun Production (KEP) director Jalot Jeman to step forward and produce films. Only by producing more movies and films can this industry flourish.

“Therefore, we urge those who are passionate about the film industry to take steps toward creating documentaries and other productions. My ministry is always ready to assist in its development,” he said during a press conference on the Tumbukan Emas film making at Grand Margherita Hotel here on Thursday (Jan 16).

Meanwhile, director Jalot said that the film is inspired by the story of Sapok Biki and will be acted by Sarawakian boxer Daeloniel Mcdelon Bong, known as ‘Kilat Boy’.

“We will be using the current years. We are still looking for suitable and interesting locations that can also serve as tourist attractions.

“As usual, what we know is that films allow us to explore places and introduce tourism spots in Sarawak through film making,” he said.

The film will portray Sapok’s life story, starting from his childhood, where he was known as an energetic boy with a passion for music and sports.

Despite being small and quiet, he frequently became a target for bullies. However, his knack for dodging punches and evading crumpled paper thrown at him showcased his innate talent.

His crowning achievement came when Sapok was selected to represent Malaysia in the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

With determination and courage, he defeated Moses Kinyra, an African champion dubbed the “Muhammad Ali of Kenya,” with a score of 19-13.

This victory not only etched his name in history as Malaysia’s first boxing gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games but also elevated Sapok as a national sports icon.

With support from the ministry, production for Tumbukan Emas is scheduled to commence in March 2025 and is anticipated to be completed within 25 days.

The film is set to premiere on July 22, in celebration of Sarawak Day and will be shown in cinemas across the country, aiming for an audience of 1 million viewers.
